Backline Strategy

For most players the limiting factor to the quantity of cards that are utilized during an attack or while defending is not the amount of cards that they are permitted to have in their deck (90 maximum) but rather their respective attack or defense parameters.

Meet Joe:

Joe has an his attack parameter currently at 200. His frontline has a total “pwr needed” of 50. That means Joe can use 150 attack parameter points for his backline. For simplicity let’s say the average card has a “pwr needed” of 10. Therefor Joe could use 15 cards in his backline.

To get the most out of these precious parameter points allocated to his backline, Joe needs to consider a cards efficiency rating. Cards with a higher efficiency rating are going to allow Joe to utilize his backline to its fullest potential.

Efficiency rating is calculated as: PM Max Points / PWR Needed

Comparing two cards.

Eager Ammit: pwr = 12 atk = 8050, efficiency = 670 (8050 / 12)
Timber Dragon: pwr = 5 atk = 3500, efficiency = 700 (3500 / 5)

In addition to efficiency Joe should also consider a cards’ value. A cards’ value is calculated as follows: efficiency / cost. Using the same two cards as above let’s figure out each cards’ value.

Eager Ammit: efficiency = 670 cost = 10pp, value = 67 (670 / 10)
Timber Dragon: efficiency = 700 cost = 2pp, value = 350 (700 / 2)

Now let’s fill Joes’ backline once with Eager Ammits and once with Timber Dragons and see what happens. Remember Joe has 150 attack parameter points he can use.

Using Eager Ammit, Joe could have 12 Eagers in his backline (150 / 12 = 12).
Using Timber Dragon, Joe could have 30 Timber Dragons in his backline (150 / 5 = 30).

Now let’s see what Joes backline total points and cost would be for each of these situations.

Eager Ammit: Total attack points = 96,600 (12 * 8050), cost = 120pp (12 * 10pp)
Timber Dragon: Total attack points = 105,000 (30 * 3500), cost = 60pp (30 * 2pp)

As you can see from this example Joe can fill his backline spending half the cost on Timber Dragon than on Eager Ammit and have a more powerful backline at the same time.

  3. Is It Not Better To Diversify Your Back Line Using Varying Powers And Cards (Not Saying They All Have To Be High) To Avoid Making Yourself Week Against Anything That Negates Your Single Color

    1. That would be a topic for another day and is not addressed above, nor does it imply you should have a single element throughout your deck. It is simply illustrating that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg while composing a deck. Simply how to be a bargain shopper.

  4. To Josh, Kyle, & Scott: I have been researching this very same topic and have come to some interesting conclusions. Scott is right with his "Back Line" strategy. As for using separated cards with skills against other elements which Kyle mentioned, He is also right with this as well. I am actually employing both methods into my deck as we speak. I have just completed 4 defense lines: 1 being all forest with high skills (my element) 2 a line against fire with anti-fire skills 3 a line against water with anti-water skills, and a Battle Royale line. With the remaining slots in my deck I am allocating to finding cards such as Scott suggests, because it actually does come into play on the backline. BIG NEWS: I have just developed an excel spreadsheet that figures out what cards activate on your defense line (WITHOUT HAVING SOMEONE TO BATTLE YOU AND TELL YOU!) It has to to with the cards overall pwr to def ratio. I am in the process of fine tuning it and it will be for sale soon (small fee) for time incurred during development. I will keep you all posted as knowledge of this will transform the way people play the game. Cheers, Night all

  5. BTW, great article Scott! I'm rethinking my entire backline strategy and what I'm going to do with my cards. I know where to start, it's just getting there is all, lol.

  6. either way, Dont want guild members to be confused by the word standard. I'll admit, I really dont know enough about this game to give any kind of valid opinion on this strategy. Sean (Kryptkilla) says its valid and I trust hes right. But, this is just strategy/advice on the back line and nothing more. This guild will never set any kind of standard on how a member plays his/her deck. If you use this strategy, Thats fine by us, If you dont, well thats fine too. I personally don't like collecting duplicates myself. lol. Anyway, yeah, point being, this will not be standard that guild members are required to follow. Just think of it as good advice, which i'm sure it is.

  7. Excel is a closed/proprietary piece of software developed by Microsoft and has features that are only available to Excel. I was simply asking if he could publish it in a standard that can be read by other spreadsheet software besides Excel.

Users of PCs running an OS other than Winduhs are more inclined to use the term. If I remember correctly Sean is running Linux.

    1. Im writing it in Open Office, so I should be able to save it on many different formats from there. I'm also thinking about adding a Java platform GUI or something maybe... Dunno quite yet but I want to be out with it within 2-3 weeks. It is super killer as is now, but should be quite awesome soon. I am running Win 8 and Ubuntu.
